Biography

Jess S. Gorzelitz, PhD is an Assistant Professor and exercise oncology researcher committed to improving the lives of individuals affected by cancer through evidence-based physical activity. Her scholarship focuses on the role of exercise across the cancer continuum—from diagnosis through survivorship—with an emphasis on reducing treatment-related side effects, improving functional outcomes, and enhancing long-term quality of life. Her work integrates epidemiology, behavioral science, and intervention research to better understand how to design, deliver, and scale physical activity programs that are both effective and accessible in real-world settings. This clinic is an implementation-focused initiative that bridges the strong evidence supporting exercise for cancer patients and survivors with real-world clinical care at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Gorzelitz is particularly passionate about translating research into practice. She is dedicated to ensuring that exercise is not only recommended, but meaningfully integrated into cancer care in ways that are safe, personalized, and sustainable. Her work is driven by a commitment to health equity and meeting individuals where they are, recognizing the diverse needs and experiences of people living with and beyond cancer.

She founded the Exercise Oncology Clinic to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and clinical care—creating a supportive environment where individuals can engage in tailored, medically-informed exercise programming. Through this work, Dr. Gorzelitz aims to empower patients to regain strength, confidence, and a sense of control, using movement as a vital component of healing and recovery.
